OLLI members please note the opportunity for a great upcoming event below!

Mason Provost and Center for Humanities Research Co-sponsored Symposium: Thinking Through American Polarization on Friday, November 18, 1:00-5:00, EST.

The symposium will be a hybrid event. The in-person portion will be in Mason’s Merton Hall, Room 1201, or you may join virtually on Zoom. Registration is required for both.

The symposium, addressing the histories, causes, and mechanisms of polarization, will combine a panel of external presentations, each about 15-20 minutes, and a conversation with a second panel led by Mason faculty. Panel One will be chaired by Alison Landsberg, professor of history and art history and cultural studies, and director of the Center for Humanities Research at Mason. Panel Two will be chaired by Peter Stearns, professor of history and art history and provost emeritus at Mason.

Start the Holiday Season with the OLLI Holiday Party

After the pandemic interruption, a highly-anticipated OLLI tradition lives again! Come and enjoy OLLI’s biggest in-person social event of the season;
The OLLI Annual Holiday Party will be on Thursday, December 1 from 11:30 to 2:30 at the Country Club of Fairfax, located at 5110 Ox Road in Fairfax. The event will begin at 11:30 as you gather over drinks (cash bar) and check in at the registration table.

Seeing our OLLI friends is not the only good thing. There will be an outstanding menu available. Entrées include pasta primavera, chicken piccata, and spinach salad with grilled chicken. The chicken and pasta entrées include rolls and salad; all meals include beverage and dessert. You can indicate your choice of entrée and pay the $50 when you register on the OLLI member portal. After lunch you will be entertained with a performance by the Tallwood Trio. A drawing for door prizes will follow. OLLI members are welcome to bring a guest; a $50 charge per person applies.

OLLI Veterans Day Program...Is Today!

Don't forget that today, November 11, at 1:00, OLLI will present its annual Veterans Day program. This year's featured speaker will be the commander of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment, also known as The Old Guard. You will learn more about the responsibilities of this military unit and the stringent requirements for those selected to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

Check the daily listing for the Zoom codes and spend a little time to honor the service of our OLLI military members and all veterans.

Bring ideas for literature, theater, poetry, writing, or language programs, and possible resources, such as individuals you may know who might want to teach, or any other thoughts on this popular OLLI program area. And, of course, if you or anyone you know would like to join our planning group, here is your opportunity to see the process in action. More Upcoming Mason Jazz Concerts

Mason Jazz concerts this November offer lots of variety. Two concerts were addressed in the last issue of E-News. The following announcements are for two concerts coming up on November 16 and November 18.

The Jazz Workshop - Wednesday, November 16, 8:00, at the Center for the Arts. The concert is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

Directed by John Kocur, the Jazz Workshop explores the intersection of improvisation and composition in an atypical jazz ensemble. This performance will feature some rare gems and jazz classics by Oliver Nelson, Ella Fitzgerald, Charles Mingus, Mary Lou Williams, and Cannonball Adderley.

Jazz4Justice™ – Jazz & Blues In America - Monday, November 18, 8:00, at the Center for the Arts. Tickets: $20 Adults, $15 Seniors and Students (click here). 

Join Mason Jazz and Friends as we explore the roots and development of America's greatest contribution to the Arts—Jazz.

Established in 2001 by Fairfax attorney Edward L. Weiner, Esq. and Jim Carroll, founder of Mason Jazz Studies, Jazz4Justice™ is an award-winning annual concert presented by Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) and Mason Jazz Studies. Proceeds from the evening benefit LSNV to continue its mission of service to the Northern Virginia community as well as providing financial support for the Mason Jazz Studies department for scholarships, trips, and recordings. Jam session immediately following the concert, so bring your instrument (or voice) and sit in!

Weekly Conversations Continue – November 16 HOLIDAY PLANS

Continuing our Wednesday Conversations series, we (Team Bloch) will moderate a Zoom discussion on November 16 at 4:00, where every OLLI member is most welcome to join us to talk about our chosen topic for the week: Share Your Holiday Plans. We encourage an informal interactive exchange. No sign-ups needed; participation is totally ad hoc. Check the Daily Schedule or just use the OLLI Chat Line meeting ID.

Holiday season is coming up fast: Thanksgiving, Hannukah, Christmas, New Year's. Some of us have plans for celebrating; others will be happy to ignore the whole season. Where do you stand? Looking forward to family get-together(s)? Traveling? Preparing and eating traditional foods? Decorating? Staying away from crowds and super-spreader events another year? And – most important – what's your favorite flavor of pie? Share your thoughts with us for a jolly session or perhaps a serious one of reflection.

 Heads up for the next Conversation: note that we will skip November 23. On November 30, our topic probably will be Downsizing and "DeAcquiring"—suggested by an OLLI member.

Learn in 30: Downloading Videos from the Web

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, November 19, in person and via Zoom. You must observe OLLI/GMU Health protocols (see this link). Program activities begin at 1:00; the Zoom session usually opens at 12:45. Coffee, soda, and individual snack packages will be available.

Every day, we hear about data breaches, ransomware attacks, and catastrophic destruction of business and homes. But untold is the loss of information like digital documents, pictures, and information. In today's world where we live in digital times, who has all their "e-data" property in a safe place?

In his presentation, “The Computer Backup, your lifeline in case of digital emergency,” Mr. Dotzauer will explain the different technologies, media, and methods that you need to succeed! He will talk about several key factors that are important for a worry-free, data-retaining world!

Uwe Dotzauer is a network engineer and computer consultant with more than 20 years of experience. He has specialized in Apple Macintosh technology since 1998 and enjoys educating users about the daily challenges in the "IT World" around us. He graduated from George Mason University with a masters degree in telecommunication and network forensics.


Learn in 30: Downloading Videos from the Web – Presented by John Krout

This Learn in 30 presentation will introduce a free computer application that, given a web page address (URL) for a video, will download a video to local storage on your computer, such as a hard drive, flash drive, or solid-state drive (SSD). It works for both YouTube videos and the educational videos on the PATACS Recent Meetings page. The application is available for Windows, Macintosh, and Ubuntu Linux. After downloading a video, you can copy it to other computers and smartphones and tablets.

John Krout is a frequent presenter at our meetings on a wide range of computer, technology and photography topics, and author of many articles for the PATACS Posts newsletter.

Looking for OLLI Survey Participants!

As a master’s student in the Environmental Science and Policy Department at Mason, I would like to invite OLLI members to participate in a survey about sustainable packaging. The goal of the survey is to understand how consumers view ten key sustainable packaging concepts used within the personal care product/cosmetics industry and to determine which concepts consumers prefer. This survey is for research purposes only.

If you would like to participate in the survey to be used for research, please click the link below. If you choose to participate you will be asked about your general personal care product/cosmetics use, your willingness to buy packages based on specific features, how you rank the ten packaging concepts against each other, and demographic questions. This survey should take under 15 minutes to complete. The survey will be open for responses until Friday, December 16.

OLLI Celebrates the Service of Member Veterans

OLLI is fortunate to have many members who have retired from or served in the various military branches. On Friday, November 11, OLLI will hold its annual Veterans Day program to honor the service of our veterans.

The OLLI Veterans Day program was begun several years ago by then OLLI member and Board representative, Martha Powers, to recognize the military service of so many OLLI members. After Martha’s good work, Jim Dunphy took over as coordinator until his death, continuing the outstanding programs of service recognition. For many years, two OLLI members from WWII—Chester Myslicki and Adrian Pelzner—were always saluted for their service. Chester passed away at the age of 100 shortly after being recognized and honored at the 2020 event.

This year’s program will include the traditional National Anthem and the rousing service songs. The featured guests will be representatives of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment, often known as The Old Guard. Last year The Old Guard celebrated its 150th anniversary with many events and activities, culminating in a three-day event where the public was allowed access to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to pay personal respects. It was quite a moving event for those of us who attended.

If you haven’t signed up for this year’s program, there’s still time. Just contact the OLLI registrar. The program begins at 1:00 on Friday, November 11. It’s on Zoom, of course, for this year. Meeting codes will be provided in the emailed OLLI Daily Schedule notification.

Come join us in saluting our OLLI veterans, and all veterans, for their service to our country!
Walk and Talk News

Thirteen Walk & Talk Club members experienced the joy of exploring part of the Gerry Connolly Cross Country Trail on October 31. In addition to spotting a heron, walkers watched two horses grazing in their pasture and squirrels scampering for nuts among the fall leaves. Debby Mossburg led the group on a well-paved and maintained Fairfax County path from Prosperity Avenue up to King Arthur Road and then back again. Afterward, members met at the Cozy District Cafe for coffee, tea, cocoa, and lively conversation.

Future walks between fall and winter terms include an excursion at Wolf Trap Park in mid-November and a holiday walk at Meadowlark Gardens in December.

No walks are scheduled for November 7-11 and November 21-25.

The next outing, set for November 15 at 9:00, will be led by Bob Heyer. He’ll lead walkers on Wolf Trap Trail. The loop trail is 2.5 miles long and is considered an easy route, partly along a river and mainly through a forest. Participants will meet and park at 1551 Trap Road, Vienna. Those interested in meeting for coffee or tea afterward will convene at Tyson’s Bagel Market, 8137 Leesburg Pike, Tyson’s Corner.

Those who plan to walk need to RSVP to one of the club co-chairs: Marilyn Harriman ([email protected]) or Bob Heyer ([email protected]).

Mason Jazz concerts coming soon offer lots of variety. The month kicks off with two concerts in the first half of November:

Smart Music for Older Adults: Research Volunteer Opportunity!

Are you interested in how personalized music creates physiological reactions?

George Mason University is looking for adults ages 60+ to participate in a research study called “Smart Music for Older Adults” (IRB #1904914) to explore the usage of wearable sensors in interventions using music. The aim of the research is to test wearable technology for a personalized music intervention for older adults. Participants will volunteer for about 60 minutes at a location with convenient parking, where they will listen to music while wearing a smartwatch (provided). Participants will get to listen to their favorite songs and then be interviewed by a member of the research team. The device will collect physiological measures such as heart rate and skin conductance and the research team will observe and video record reactions. After completion of the session, participants will be invited to participate in a 60-minute focus group to discuss their thoughts about wearable sensors. The total time to participate in this study will be no longer than 2 hours 30 minutes.

Board of Directors Meeting Highlights

The Board of Directors met at Tallwood on October 21. Your OLLI Board is working hard to find the balance between online and in-person classes and events as we continue to cope with pandemic issues. We just had a Halloween party and hope many of you will attend the annual Holiday Party on December 1 (signup deadline is November 19). In November, the Board will have a strategic planning retreat to help us figure out what we need to be doing to enhance our OLLI experiences and ensure that our organization stays strong.

We have a new Board member. Richard Crawford was confirmed to complete Charley Silver’s term after Charley resigned. We thank Charley for his service to us.

The Health Advisory Work Group encourages us all to get our flu and bivalent COVID shots by Halloween. Infection rates in our area are down now, but more flu and COVID cases are expected when the weather gets colder.

Under old business, the Board addressed resolutions to amend/change the OLLI Policy and Procedures Manual based on identified minor updates to OLLI administrative procedures and revision to accounting procedures for non-designated contributions to the OLLI Friends account. Under new business, the Board approved proposed guidelines and assumptions for the 2023 budget and approved the use of a financial advisor to manage OLLI investments.
Weekly Conversations, November 2 –  Daylight Saving Time

Continuing our Wednesday Conversations series, we (Team Bloch) will moderate a Zoom discussion on Wednesday November 2 at 4:00, where every OLLI member is most welcome to join us to talk about our chosen topic for this week: Daylight Saving Time (DST). We encourage an informal interactive exchange. No sign-ups are needed; participation is totally ad hoc.

We will be reminded that our time "falls back" on November 6 this year. How do you feel about that? Do you have a difficult time adjusting in the fall when darkness falls before dinner? Have you lived at a latitude where the difference in daylight from summer to winter is extreme? Are you supportive of permanent DST? Join us on November 2 and share your thoughts.

Regardless of whether the Sunshine Protection Act (making DST the standard year-round time for the US) is fully adopted into law, Americans will once again spring forward and advance their clocks on Sunday, March 12, 2023 — just about 126 days after it ends in 2022. DST is scheduled to end on November 5, 2023. While this bill passed the Senate in May, there is still no action in the House other than studying the idea.

Each week, we pre-select a topic and advertise it in the OLLI E-News, the OLLI E-Blast and/or Communicator, and the OLLI Daily Schedule email (so it will be “in your face” and hard to miss). History Club

The next meeting of the History Club will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 4:00. Our speaker will be Elva Card, and her subject could not be timelier: Vladimir Putin. Over the years Elva has done much research on Putin’s rise to power, and she will examine some of the leading theories about how he achieved this position and the influences motivating him. There is no lack of interest in the man who ended the peace Europeans had enjoyed since 1945, and there are significant questions as to a future where Putin remains in power. Elva’s presentation promises to generate much discussion, so please alert other OLLI (and non-OLLI) members to our next virtual meeting on November 2 at 4:00. The Zoom link will appear in the emailed OLLI Daily Schedule.

OLLI Holiday Party

After the pandemic interruption, a highly-anticipated OLLI tradition lives again! Come and enjoy OLLI’s biggest in-person social event of the season. The OLLI Annual Holiday Party will be on Thursday, December 1 from 11:30 to 2:30 at the Country Club of Fairfax, located at 5110 Ox Road in Fairfax. The event will begin at 11:30 as you gather over drinks (cash bar) and check‑in at the registration table. Entrées include pasta primavera, chicken piccata, and spinach salad with grilled chicken. The chicken and pasta entrées include rolls and salad; all meals include beverage and dessert. You can indicate your choice of entrée and pay the $50 when you register on the OLLI member portal. After lunch you will be entertained with a performance by the Tallwood Trio. A drawing for door prizes will follow. OLLI members are welcome to bring a guest; a $50 charge per person applies. Conversations With Friends

Think back to how you heard about OLLI. What drew your attention? Did you attend a guest lecture? Did you see an ad in the local paper or the Mason marquee on Braddock road? Did you search “lifelong learning near me” on the internet? More than likely, a friend told you about OLLI and their testimonial captured your attention. Since OLLI’s inception, conversations with friends have proven to be our best outreach tool. As you know, the pandemic limited many opportunities for you to be with friends. It certainly has been a quite a while since many of us have gotten together with our friends. Indeed, we miss each other. In the spirit of rekindling friendships and making new friends, I encourage you to invite someone you know to lunch or grab a cup of coffee and share how OLLI has enhanced your life experience. You will enjoy a lovely visit, and your friend may be very interested to try OLLI for the first time.

Have you attended a Death Cafe? Actually, it is often informative and interesting to participate. Join us next Wednesday afternoon to share your experience or learn more. The concept began with “cafe mortels,” created in 2004 by Swiss sociologist and anthropologist Bernard Crettaz. The events were adapted and popularized as “death cafés” by Jon Underwood, who held the first one in the basement of his London home. Pre‑COVID, the events were in person, always including a beverage and cake. In the age of Zoom, it is possible to attend a Death Cafe across the country and the world by merely registering online.

 

Heads up for the following week’s conversation: November 2: Daylight Savings Time – Pros and Cons and projections for the future of DST.

Each week, we pre-select a topic and advertise it in the OLLI E‑News, the OLLI E‑Blast and/or Communicator, and the OLLI Daily Schedule email (so it will be “in your face” and hard to miss). Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail Walk and Talk

Phyllis Krochmal led club members on an invigorating 60‑minute W&OD Trail walk on October 18. Starting at the Vienna Community Center on a sunny, chilly morning, the walkers headed east down the old Washington and Old Dominion Railroad tracks trail. They spotted deer among the trees, the city’s official monument to LOVE, the old railway station, and a refurbished caboose.

The asphalt path is buried amongst the tall trees full of Kudzu vines, making the path well protected and surrounded by the beauty of changing autumn leaves at this time of year. The trail itself stretches 52 miles from Purcellville through Leesburg to Arlington. The club hopes to cover most of the course over time. 

Afterward, several group members enjoyed coffee and breakfast treats at the Caffe Amouri. The chatter was loud, and time was equal to the walk; worth cutting OLLI class for the camaraderie!

Upcoming walks include a walk led by Carol Esteki at Seneca Regional Park, 9:00, in Great Falls, on Friday, October 28; and a walk led by Debby Mossberg on Fairfax trails, starting on Prosperity Avenue, 8:00, in Fairfax, on October 31. Walkers also need to RSVP with a cellphone number to one of the club co‑chairs for each walk to let us know we can expect you on a specific walk day. This is so we know to look for you and can contact you in case of walk schedule changes.

Tour of the Historic Pohick Church Explained Our Heritage

On October 7, 35 OLLI members spent the morning visiting and touring historic Pohick Church in Lorton. The tour began with a 30‑minute talk by three knowledgeable docents, Fred Crawford, Marleen McCabe, and Susan Schultz. The docents enlightened participants about the church’s history, beginning with stories about its founders: vestrymen Thomas Baron Cameron (Lord Fairfax), George Washington, and George Mason.

The docents explained how early church parishioners kept warm in the deep of winter by keeping heated bricks under their feet in pew boxes. OLLI members also heard about the defacing and destruction of the church building during the Civil War. They saw remnants of Civil War graffiti on the interior wall and the building façade. the group explored the cemetery and heard from the cemetery warden, Sandra Caesar. She explained that local Lorton families donated land for the cemetery and that some descendants attend the church today. The graveyard serves Pohick Church members, families with plots, and the larger Lorton community via the Memorial Garden.

Some participants took advantage of shopping at the Golden Dove Gift Shop, while others finished their visit with a stroll in the flower gardens in the courtyard.

It was a beautiful, sunny day for members to learn about one of the area’s earliest churches and community life during colonial and post-revolutionary days. Church docents remarked how much they enjoyed the OLLI group because of their enthusiasm and engagement. It was an excellent day for OLLI members to get out and learn about local history. Continuing our Wednesday conversations series, Team Bloch (Brenda Bloch-Young and Doris Bloch) will moderate a Zoom discussion on Wednesday October 19 at 4:00, where any and every OLLI member is most welcome to join us to talk about our chosen topic: This week it will be "Where in the World Would You Most Like to Live, If Health and Money Were of No Concern?"

We foster an informal interactive experience, and we want to hear from you. Share your favorites. No sign-ups needed; participation is totally open and spontaneous. Check the emailed Daily Schedule or just use the OLLI Chat-Line meeting ID.

This is an open-ended topic. Feel free to indulge your locational fantasies, although we suggest that Gulf Coast Florida might not fit into your current plans. Tahiti? Some remote Italian village that you might even own? Vermont mountain cabin? Manhattan condo? Castle in France? Ranch in Montana? Costa Rica? Northern Virginia? (Or maybe you have already made that "big move.") Please do share the Why's of your choice/wishes with us.

Upcoming Mason Jazz Performances in October That You Will Enjoy

The next concert in our Reston jazz series is October 20, FREE and open to the public! Concerts are presented outdoors at the Reston Town Square Park 5:00 to 6:15 on Thursdays and will run through the end of October. This one is by the Raymond Mason Group (Caribbean jazz); join us!

Guitarist and Mason jazz faculty member Shawn Purcell will perform Monday, October 17 at Blues Alley to mark the release of his Origin Records CD "180." Performances are at 7:00 and 9:00. Featuring organist Pat Bianchi (Pat Martino/Lou Donaldson), drummer Jason Tiemann (Benny Golson, Ed Cherry), vocalist Darden Purcell, and trombonist Ben Patterson, the 180 album includes ten Purcell original compositions and one standard by the great Johnny Mandel. The Mason Jazz Ensemble performs its fall concert Wednesday,

What Do a Dramaturg and Musical Theater Have in Common?

Come to OLLI’s TLG Meeting to Find Out

Theater Dramaturgy—Do you know what a theater dramaturg is? Have any idea of why they are an essential part of a production team for a play? According to Court Theatre, “a dramaturg delves into the script, reading it numerous times, providing a textual analysis, and diving into the history of the text and the playwright. They provide information about the history of past productions of the play and contribute to design and production meetings.”

On Wednesday, October 26, from 4:00 to 5:30, Mason’s Associate Professor Kristin Johnsen-Neshati will speak virtually with our TLG meeting about the responsibilities of a dramaturg. It is quite a revelation to realize the impact that this little known, behind-the-scenes role has on a play. Mark your calendars and be sure to join other Theater Lovers for a really unique, virtual session.

A Special Invitation—On Sunday, October 30, you are invited to join Theater Lovers when we attend the 2:00 matinee performance of Mason’s fall musical Head Over Heels at the Center for the Arts. It is laugh-out-loud musical theater that will make you smile and want to sing along, for those of you who remember the GoGo’s. Choreographer Stefan Sittig and his phenomenal dancers add more zest to the already lively tunes sung by Mason’s talented students under the musical direction of Maestro Joe Walsh and Director Erin Gardiner. Continuing our Wednesday Conversations series, we (Team Bloch) will moderate a Zoom discussion on Wednesday, October 12 at 4:00, where any and every OLLI member is most welcome to join us to talk about our chosen topic: Mysteries (of all sorts, e.g., novels, movies, TV shows and series, podcasts, audiobooks). We foster an informal interactive experience, and we want to hear from you, OLLI members. Share your favorites. No registration needed; participation is totally open and spontaneous. Check the Daily Schedule or just use the OLLI Chat Room meeting ID.

Mystery Novels, Movies and TV Shows: What are you reading? Watching? Who’s your favorite character or characters? Recommendations welcomed. Should OLLI provide a future class on mysteries? Is anyone currently writing a novel or have you done so in the past? Do you want to tell us a Halloween-related story? Please share with us.

OLLI Walk and Talk Club News

The OLLI Walk and Talk Club will take its next trail exploration to Lake Newport in Reston on Tuesday, October 11. Starting at 8:00 from Browns Chapel Park, 1686 Browns Chapel Road, walkers will navigate a 2.4-mile path. On September 27, twelve club members found the “Hidden Pond” in the West Springfield park at the end of Greeley Boulevard, where many frogs and turtles swim daily.

The nature center in the garden provides guidance, maps, and displays of wildlife, pavilions, and trails. We ventured down the paths and found a basketball court, children’s jungle gym, an amphitheater, an open field for activities, and a meandering stream to follow through narrow pathways.

The tracks were marked with foot-long color strips on the trees along the narrow path. We traversed up and down the rolling hills and froze at times to see the deer feeding and moving about. As we transitioned to different color paths, we had to be alert for tree roots on the path and tree markings.

It was a most pleasant and refreshing hour walk seeing the beauty of the woods and meandering stream, but we could have spent a couple of hours exploring more.

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, October 15, in person and via Zoom. You must observe OLLI/George Mason health protocols (see this link) if attending on campus. Program activities begin at 1:00; the Zoom session usually opens at 12:45. Coffee and soft drinks will be available; details on individually packaged snacks are being worked out.
 
Favorite iOS Apps and Cross-Device Synergies (Including Windows!) – presented by Gabe Goldberg
Though iPhones/iPads come with numerous/assorted native (built-in) apps, they're also "blank slates," ready to be customized (and filled!) with one's personal selection/collection of apps. How do you find/select the (relatively) few to use from the bazillions in the app store? And how do you know how much storage and data each app is using? This presentation will explore the app store for browsing/selecting/installing apps, tour a few of Gabe’s favorite apps, describe app management tools, and show some useful screen shortcuts. He will highlight apps from his iOS/iPadOS experience; most, or equivalents, are also available for Android devices. Note: everyone has their own favorite/essential apps, so be ready to mention a few of yours!

Gabe has had a long career in the software industry, including writing for AARP, industry and computer publications, and The Washington Post. Gabe has been an Association of Personal Computer User Groups (APCUG) advisor for more than a decade, serving as that organization's liaison with user groups in eight states.
 
Learn in 30: Scan QR Codes for Windows Apps – Presented by John Krout
This presentation will describe how to obtain, install, and effectively use a free Windows application. You will learn how to save any presentation slide as a photo file on your Windows computer rapidly using a keystroke. If the saved image contains a QR code, then you can scan the QR code in the saved image later, at your own pace, after the presentation ends.

John Krout is a frequent presenter at our meetings on a wide range of computer, technology and photography topics, and author of many articles for the PATACS Posts newsletter.

Mason Jazz Performances in October Include Happy Hour in Reston and More

I have curated a series for the Reston Town Center and Reston Community Center, booking some of the best musicians in the area! This outdoor concert series is FREE and open to the public! Concerts are presented 5:00 to 6:15 outdoors at the Reston Town Square Park on Thursdays and will run through the end of October. Join us for this ongoing concert series!

Guitarist and Mason jazz faculty member Shawn Purcell will perform Monday, October 17 at Blues Alley to mark the release of his Origin Records CD "180." Performances are at 7:00 and 9:00. The Mason Jazz Ensemble performs its fall concert Wednesday, October 19 at 8:00 in Harris Theatre.
