Uwe Dotzauer will discuss “Online Safety NOT only for Seniors – How to Conquer the BIG CON!" We will bring you all the scams, malware, and spam! Also, HOW do we not fall for it? How can we make our computers more secure?

Uwe Dotzauer is a network engineer and computer consultant with over 20 years of experience, and who has specialized in Apple Macintosh technology since 1998. He enjoys educating users about the daily challenges in the “Cyber World” around us. He graduated from George Mason University with a Masters in Telecommunication and Network Forensics. Mr. Dotzauer enjoys volunteering for the Smithsonian National Zoo Elephant Family.

"Full" resolution HDTVs show video with a resolution of 2.1 megapixels per frame. 4K HDTVs, now available for as little as $280, show 4 times the resolution, about 8.3 megapixels per frame. Roku and many Blu-ray players now provide 4K resolution media, and Redbox even rents various titles on 4K media. Learn how you can record 4K using free apps on your smartphone or tablet, and then watch your 4K recordings on a 4K HDTV. John has used several 4K video recording apps for Android and Apple iOS.

You are invited to attend the Mason Jazz Camp, an inclusive and intensive
program for musicians (instrumental and vocal) of all levels, with a
desire to advance their musical artistry and professionalism. (Responsible
people of all ages are welcome to attend).

At the Mason Jazz Camp, you will participate in classes in improvisation,
jazz theory, ear training, performance practice (big bands and combos),
composition, arranging, and jazz history. You will also study and
participate in master classes and concerts with leading educators and
performers in the Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland region.

pair of pliers that you came for, plus the
spackle, that you tried to find before.

OLLI Ink: Back Again and Ready for Your Summer Reading

Do you know what Callithump means? How about Kerflooey? Popinjay? Soup Sandwich? Never mind. You’ll find out and laugh as you leaf through the entertaining, original, and always interesting pages of OLLI-Mason’s annual literary magazine. OLLI Ink 2022 is now online as a flip-doc (something like a Kindle) and can be found at this link.

With memoirs, stories, poems, and musings on everyday life, OLLI’s authors have created an intriguing variety of good reads. Open a page at random and you may become immersed in the experience of a family seeking a life in America at the end of World War II; or that of a new Mormon missionary as he navigates the ups and downs of his assignment in Chile; or a violin player as she discovers the joys and challenges of a musical career; or a new mother; or a young soldier returning to his midwestern home town and what turned into a rollicking (to put it mildly) fall festival.

Ralph Greenwood in Senior Olympics Basketball

Our own Ralph Greenwood traveled to Florida for a Senior Olympics event at the Convention Center in Ft. Lauderdale. Ralph is a member of an ongoing team who participated in a 3-on-3 basketball tourney as part of the Senior Olympics. His team, a team of six, didn’t have the best performance thanks to two injured players not being able to travel, and a third injury in the first game, leaving no subs. But they still enjoyed the trip and play (photo shows his 3-pointer) and are preparing for further competition. Age may be affecting all; last year there were 13 teams in Ralph’s 80 to 84 age group. This year only 7 teams.

The larger event, with a total of 12,000 participants, also included track and field, and tennis. Ages were in 5-year groups from 50 through 85, and those above. Ralph noted “It was great seeing men and women in their late 90’s still competing in track, basketball, and other sports.” One 99‑year old man ran the 400‑meter race and many other track events. One woman from Northern Virginia, nearing 100, won a silver medal in track and field competition. There was one man still high jumping at 100.

Obituary: James Keith

Former OLLI member James Keith of Fairfax passed away on March 22. He and his wife Danielle were members from fall 2016 through 2020.

Jim was a 1957 graduate of Lehigh University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He subsequently served in the Army in Rocky Flats, Colorado. His career with Dow Chemical Company included service as chair of the Chemical Manufacturing Association and its successor, the American Chemistry Council. A golfer and skier, he also enjoyed learning, especially about American history.

Coming Out of the Dark

It’s been almost two years since OLLI launched online classes using Zoom and still most of our attendees are hiding behind what I like to call “the Zoom black square of death.” These same individuals share themselves when they come to in-person classes, but, with Zoom classes, they suddenly prefer anonymity. My plea is for the membership using Zoom to become more social and welcoming to other OLLI members. This is for our own socialization and to welcome our newest members who only know the Zoom version of OLLI.

If you won’t, or can’t, turn on a camera, then display an avatar photo of yourself, hopefully smiling. To use an avatar, you will need to set up a FREE Zoom account and load your small picture into that account so it will be automatically displayed whenever your camera is not enabled. Let’s start seeing each other again at OLLI events.

Science, Technology & Health (ST&H) Program Planning Group Meeting

The co-chairs of the ST&H Program Planning Group (Mary Kornreich, Michele Romano [that’s me], and Mark Dodge) invite all OLLI members to attend our next meeting at 10:00 on Thursday, June 9, via Zoom. We are very interested to learn of any presentations you would like to hear. If you have any expertise in the science, technology, or health fields (or know of someone who does) and would be willing to teach a class, we would love to know about that also. Many of our awesome instructors had no experience in teaching until they dipped a toe in the OLLI waters. We will be glad to help you. If you would consider joining the program planning group and providing your insight, we would be delighted to have you. Let us know. It’s a lot of fun and we are a very cool group of people.

So, please save the date and mark your calendars—Thursday, June 9, at 10:00. There will be free beer and pizza. Well, not really—it’s virtual. Would be fun, though.

Reston Town Square Park Outdoor Music Series

Enjoy the early evening listening to free live concerts by the talented students at George Mason University Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music. You can choose to stay and have dinner in one of Reston's great restaurants or go home in a happy, Mason-musical mood.
 
These concerts were great fun last June and I am looking forward to this June’s music magic in Reston Town Square Park, even though the first concert is in May!

Drama in Front of the Cameras!

When you’ve got a “win-win” situation, it can be dramatic! (No pun intended.) For the last several years, members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Photography Club (OPC) have been supporting the School of Theater (SOT) with their photographic expertise. The results please both: the SOT gets a selection of pictures from various productions and the OPC photographers are supporting a good project and have increased their skills. “Wins” for everyone!
 
You’ve seen the results of the OPC photographers on Mason SOT websites, brochures, and lobby monitors, and in the Friends of Theater @ Mason E‑News. In addition to supporting the SOT’s marketing, the OPC provides students with photos to build their portfolios as they move into the larger theater community after graduation.
 
Since 2016, OPC photographers have covered more than a dozen photo shoots per year, delivering head shots of incoming students, publicity shots for each play, and extensive photo collections or galleries for all dress rehearsals and photo calls. OPC member Tom Simpson organizes the photographers, and coordinates the shoots with Ruth Yamamoto, the SOT production manager. George Bradshaw maintains the OPC photo repository and provides access to all the photographers’ publicly viewable SOT images.
 
As a photographer who participates in this project, Dan Feighery recalls the initial involvement with the SOT through the Friends of the Center for the Arts. “The Friends held dinner meetings in their homes with presentations from Mason's College of Visual and Performing Arts faculty. Rita Gustin asked for OPC volunteers to document those events,” Dan said. The OPC’s generosity and ability was quickly recognized and the relationship with the SOT began.
 
The actors’ skills never cease to amaze me. In 2015, I attended the SOT’s first reading of The Crucible. Next to me sat a young lady playing the role of Abigail. When her time came to read, she suddenly became a different person, assuming the appearance and voice of that character. I didn’t recognize her. I wanted to capture that transformational experience with my new photo hobby!
 
The OPC photographers find opportunities for taking their photographic skills to the next level: from capturing the right moment to making sure the camera’s exposure accommodates the quickly varying lighting conditions, to organizing the cast’s group shots after photo call. “Every new experience and challenge makes all of us better photographers,” said OPC member John Nash.
 
Ruth’s appreciation of the OPC photographers completes the circle, explaining why they so enjoy this project: “It has been a pleasure and an honor to work with the OLLI photographers since I have been here. Odd as this may sound, it’s like finding a good mechanic. People who are dependable, good at what they do, and eager to share their expertise are hard to find.”

Current vaccination policy for the Center for the Arts and Hylton Performing Arts Center is summarized as follows:

Audience members are not currently required to show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test result for most events except when required by the event organizer or artist. If proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test result is required for a specific event, it will be indicated on the webpage with event details. Face coverings continue to be required at all events.

Dr. Linda Apple Monson produces a periodic “Notes from the Director.” This email is full of interesting online performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music. OLLI President's Message: May 13

PATACS 2022 Donation to OLLI

Since its first meeting in January of 2009, OLLI's Computer Club—the OLLI PC User Group or OPCUG—has been holding joint meetings with the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), with the third Saturday sessions drawing 500 to 600 attendees annually. On April 16, PATACS presented a check for $500 to Bob Heyer, OPCUG coordinator and OLLI Board member, who received the donation on behalf of the Friends of OLLI (FOLLI); see photo by John Krout. The funds are designated for technology and facilities improvements to the TA‑1 classroom. PATACS contributions to OLLI since 2010 total $3750. Three flat-panel monitors for use at the joint meetings and PC Clinic sessions were also donated to OPCUG earlier in the partnership.

Sharing Public Google Calendars  

Learn in 30: Cryptocurrency

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, May 21, in person and via Zoom. If attending in person, you must observe OLLI/GMU Health protocols (see: https://olli.gmu.edu/health-and-safety/). Program activities begin at 1:00; the Zoom session usually opens at 12:45.

Sharing Public Google Calendars – Presented by John Krout

This presentation will introduce many features of using Google Calendar to publicize public meeting event schedules. This will be of interest to any organization that holds scheduled meetings and welcomes a large group or the general public. A public Google Calendar can provide necessary repetition by providing one or more event notifications for each occurrence of a repeating meeting schedule to all who use the calendar.

You will learn:

  • How to create a Google Calendar and add both single-occurrence events and repeating events to the calendar, including setting event reminder notifications. Any Google Calendar you create is automatically owned by you.
  • How to update read-access rights to a Google Calendar so that the calendar can be viewed (but not modified) by a specific list of individuals, or by the public.
  • How to update one occurrence of a repeating meeting event in a Google Calendar so that the meeting topic can be publicized.
  • How to share event-entry and update rights for a Google Calendar with specific individuals.
  • How to publicize a public Google Calendar by obtaining and sharing a read-only URL for the calendar. This URL can be shared in flyers/emails and on web sites; it can be encoded in a QR code.
  • How the calendar owner and the public can use the Google Calendar app on smart phones and tablets to view multiple Google Calendars all at once.

Learn in 30 – Cryptocurrency:  Presented by Roger Fujii

There are a lot of misunderstandings about cryptocurrency. This quick primer is meant to say what cryptocurrency is, and what it isn't. We hope this will remove some of the confusion around the term. It will cover some of the terminology used with cryptocurrency, so one can have a minimum understanding of what all the hype is about.

Report from the 2022 OLLI National Convention

The 14th annual Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes National Conference was held April 25‑27 at the OMNI Interlocken Hotel in Broomfield, Colorado. Board member Zachary Teich and I attended the event. The conference featured excellent speakers and great networking opportunities for the 125 OLLIs across the country to learn, share best practices, and collaborate. Over the three-day conference, we covered topics such as fundraising, effective marketing techniques, diversity, equity, inclusion, and collaborating with retirement communities.
 
Our benefactor, Bernard Osher, and Osher Foundation President Mary Bitterman provided words of encouragement. During the opening session a contest consisting of OLLI “Woo Hoos” was conducted to highlight OLLI events, ideas, and programs across the network. In the first round of winners, OLLI Mason gained recognition for its innovative “Caste,” an eight-week course coordinated by Terri Feldmayer and Gloria Loew of the Humanities and Social Sciences program planning group. It was the selected winner! The prize was an iPad, to be added to our technology inventory for use in our classrooms.
 
Fundraising expert Diane Lebson, co‑founder of Evergreen Philanthropic Solutions and author of For a Good Cause, addressed the group. Ms. Lebson’s presentation “Raising money you need for the critical work you do,” spoke about donor engagement. Dr. Louise Aronson MD, MFA, Professor UCSF Division of Geriatrics and author of Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life, spoke about ageism and the perceptions we have about words that define age.

This special presentation on the humanitarian crisis along the Polish-Ukrainian border, sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, will cover the instructor’s journey from Arlington, VA, to Lviv, Ukraine, and to Poland. The instructor will describe border activities during Europe’s largest humanitarian crisis since WWII, sharing anecdotes of how she and others helped those fleeing Ukraine—refugees who have been crossing the border seeking refuge and new beginnings. She will share two of the many videos recorded by her daughter while they were at the border.

Velida Kent, a Crimean Tatar American, received her MEd from George Mason University. She was born and grew up in Uzbekistan where her grandparents/parents were exiled from Crimea by Stalin in 1944. She and her family have lived in Poland, Thailand, and Ukraine. She and her husband, a Foreign Service officer, live in Arlington.
Non-Fiction Book Club to Meet and Plan

Reston Book Club to Hold Spring Luncheon

The Reston Book Club will meet in person for its spring luncheon on Friday, May 13 at 12:15, at  Café Montmartre in Lake Anne, Reston. No RSVP is necessary—just show up. The luncheon will be outside, weather permitting. We look forward to seeing you there.
OLLI Photo Club Community Outreach – Rebuilding Together

Over the past several years, members of the OLLI Photography Club have supported various community activities. One effort, with an organization called Rebuilding Together, helps repair and upgrade homes for health, safety, and accessibility issues at no charge to the homeowner. A bonus for photographers is a chance to practice or learn new techniques in tight spaces or strong sunlight.

Some Rebuilding projects are illustrated here. The photo at the right shows tool bags lined up for the inside work while two volunteers prepare to install a metal handrail. In another example, at the left, a volunteer installs grab bars in a small narrow bathroom. Such shower grab bars are typical modifications helpful to people as they age.

For complex projects, a yard may turn into a workshop, or perhaps become the best place to install a metal wheelchair ramp for a homeowner with mobility limitations. The Rebuilding Together group prioritizes aid to seniors, people living with disabilities, families with children, and veterans.More specifics can be found through a quick internet search (e.g., Rebuilding Together).
Notes from the Stratford Hall Field Trip

On April 1, 26 OLLI members boarded an early-morning bus to Stratford Hall Mansion in Stratford, VA. Our day was amazing! At the visitor center, we saw a high-quality exhibit of artifacts, and each of us received a full-color guidebook of photos and details about each displayed item. Since ours was a V.I.P. tour, the docents brought out two items rarely shared with visitors, one being a hat worn by Robert E. Lee during the Civil War.

We spent some time at the carriage house viewing the carriage collection, then went to the "Great House" of Stratford Hall, birthplace of Robert E. Lee. After examining the exterior brickwork (which in itself was fascinating!), we toured rooms of the house and learned some interesting history.

Dr. Kelley Deetz and the other docents conveyed their enthusiasm for their jobs and their passion for the history of the place. We visited the gift shop, then had lunch before departing. All in all, it was a fine trip, with many positive comments from OLLI members. Dr. Deetz thoroughly enjoyed our group, particularly our unwavering attention span and level of engagement.
OLLI Photo Club Members’ Works Selected for Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Exhibit

Works of two OLLI Photography Club members have been selected for the 12th Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography exhibition. This year’s exhibit is open from May 1‑31; it is virtual and can be viewed by clicking here.

Candidate images must start out as photographs from a camera and can then be artistically manipulated if desired. Over the last eleven years this exhibit has attracted entries from international and American photographic artists. Images accepted from OLLI members this year (shown below) are "Exponential" and "Seeking" by Dan Feighery, as well as "Teapot Spiral" and "American Proud" by Ed Marion. Dan's approach is to find something looking through the lens for a more simplified image, whereas Ed's approach is to amplify the inherent feeling of an image with more artistic adjustments.

According to Dictionary.com: “The word philharmonic literally means ‘music loving.’ The English word is modeled on French or Italian forms ultimately based on the Greek roots philos (loving, dear) and harmonia (‘music, agreement, joint’). Philharmonic is found in English by the 1740s, used of largely organizations dedicated to their love of music, e.g., philharmonic society.”

According to Wikipedia; “A revival is a restaging of a stage production after its original run has closed. New material may be added.”

According to Dictionary.com: “A revival is an evangelistic service or series of services for the purposes of effecting a religious awakening….”

Current vaccination policy for the Center for the Arts and Hylton Performing Arts Center is summarized as follows:

Beginning May 2, audience members will not be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test result for most events except when required by the event organizer or artist. If proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test result is required for a specific event, it will be indicated on the webpage with event details. Face coverings continue to be required at all events.

Dr. Linda Apple Monson produces a periodic “Notes from the Director.” This email is full of interesting online performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music. OLLI Board of Directors Election Voting Starts a Week from Today

Voting in the Board of Directors election begins next Friday, May 6, in the election to fill five vacant positions on the OLLI Board for the next three years. Here are the candidates for the positions.



Go to the OLLI website at olli.gmu.edu, then click on Board of Directors Candidates to read the bios of the candidates. Everyone is welcome on Friday, May 6, at the ZOOM OLLI annual membership meeting at 10:00. The Board candidates will introduce themselves at the meeting and take questions. The election will begin at noon that day.

Spring into Music

Nearing the end of Mason’s academic year and 50th anniversary, I want to tell everyone about some great upcoming music events at Mason’s Dewberry School for your enjoyment.
 
Please mark your calendars for:
 
Sunday, May 1, 11:00-1:00: Friends of Music at Mason (FOMM) spring reception at Coyote Grille in downtown Fairfax—a fun lunch/brunch time celebrating music, good friends, and good food. A portion of your meal cost will be donated to FOMM, so your fun will be charitable as well. There will be live musical entertainment from a Mason music alum, and we will be on the covered porch. Please RSVP to [email protected] immediately. There are a few spaces left.
 
Saturday, May 7, 3:30-8:30: Fairfax Uncorked at Blenheim House in downtown Fairfax—Mason’s jazz students and faculty will provide the entertainment for the afternoon and evening of wine and jazz—a great combo!
 
Sunday, May 8, 7:00: Mason Symphony Orchestra concert with concerto soloists and conductor, Dr. Soo Han—this promises to be a very special musical evening and there will be recognition of our FOMM Honoree, Barbara Jacksier. If you haven’t seen any of Dr. Han’s concerts, you are in for a treat.
 
There are also many student recitals available on Mason’s YouTube channel. It’s always great to see musical talent from home.
 
A special incentive—there is a contest among those of you who email me at [email protected] by May 1. If your email is selected from those who respond, you will win a free Mason Pond deck parking pass. The Mason Pond deck is right next to Mason’s Center for the Arts. This will be good for free parking for the May 8 Symphony Orchestra concert or for other Mason music events this month.
 
I look forward to seeing my OLLI friends at these very special upcoming Mason music events.

Travel to the Caribbean with the Steel Pan Ensemble, directed by Victor Provost, countries of Latin America, with the Down Beat Award-winning Latin American Ensemble, directed by Dr. Juan Megna, and back home again to the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, with the Braddock Road Brass Band, directed by Graham Breedlove!
