The OLLI catalog for the summer term (June 24–August 2) is out and available online here. Priority registration begins May 21 at 9:00 and ends May 29 at noon.

OLLI-Mason Annual Business Meeting By Rita Way, SecretaryOLLI’s annual business meeting was held at Tallwood on May 3, 2019.President Bill Taylor gave the opening remarks and thanked the Board, OLLI volunteers, and members for their support and efforts during the year. He thanked Evan Douple and the nominating committee for their efforts in selecting a fine slate of candidates. Bill also thanked the Hospitality Committee for putting together the OLLI picnic following the meeting.
Executive Director Jennifer Disano outlined the accomplishments from the past year. They include partnerships with AARP and Mason Library, a record number (600+) of courses developed this year by our outstanding program committees, and our current membership of 1,141. The Strategic Planning Committee completed a draft of strategic goals in consultation with the Board and committee chairs. Other accomplishments included increased opportunities for member feedback and the establishment of a committee for volunteer recognition.
OLLI’s goals for 2019-2020 are to complete the strategic plan and share it with membership, to incorporate the strategic plan into an annual operational plan, and to complete planning and funding for an accessibility ramp at Tallwood. Jennifer also hopes to have more collaborative programs with Mason, develop new funding sources, and continue to make outreach a priority. (Photos by Paul Van Hemel)
During the second half of the annual meeting, the candidates running for the Board were introduced to the members. Each candidate gave a short presentation and then the candidates took questions from the audience. Voting started May 3 and will end May 17. Members can send in their votes electronically or by paper ballot.
OLLI’s Audiovisual Support Committee (a.k.a. The Tom Swift Squad) seeks additional volunteers to help ensure the smooth employment of OLLI’s audiovisual resources. Our primary mission is to help instructors, liaisons, and staff with any audiovisual issues that might arise during the classes we attend.
We’ll be meeting at 2:00 on Wednesday, May 15, in TA‑1. Our activities for this meeting will be the updating of cabling and equipment documentation at Tallwood and training on classroom gear.

Lost Your Phone? Presentation by John Krout
You will learn some simple steps to take in advance to help you find your lost or misplaced smart phone. This is important: first, smart phones are costly to replace; second, many of us keep a lot of valuable personal information on smart phones. Finding a misplaced phone quickly can be a great relief!
Good news: both Android phones and iPhones have built‑in features that you can enable so you can use a web site to locate the phone on an online map. The presentation will demonstrate those web sites, which also let you take various actions such as ringing the phone so you can hear it.
Learn in 30: Stan Schretter – Displaying Mobile Devices Using Zoom
Demonstrating mobile device operations and applications during OLLI classes has never been fully supported with the Windows PC used at OLLI. Approaches using the docucam or direct cable connections typically have produced unsatisfactory results. Recently, Stan has started to use Zoom to display the mobile screen onto the PC and hence into the projector display. This approach seems to provide both high quality displays and enough bandwidth to follow rapid movement in the mobile screen. The presentation will demonstrate cell‑phone photo technology.

OLLI Photo Club Member Works Selected for Exhibition By John Nash, E-News Editor, Staff WriterRecently, six OLLI Photo Club members had photographs selected for exhibition in the Ninth Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Competition (2019). The competition is national in scope and often draws more than 400 entries from across the nation and abroad. Members who were honored to have their photographs selected were Dan and Jean Feighery, Bob Kelberg, John Nash, Ed Parker, and Tom Simpson.“The Miller competition is one of the most prestigious venues for abstract photography,” said Dan Feighery who, along with his wife, Jean, has entered the competition and had photographs selected for the last several years.
Entries must originate as photographs but may be altered electronically or otherwise to reflect an abstract image which plays on the senses and emotions. According to the competition definition, abstracts are nonrepresentational and do not rely upon recognizable subject matter, but rather consist of colors, tones, shapes, and textures. Abstracts are the poetry of photography and, like other works of art, are felt as well as seen. Some consider abstracts difficult to master or even to understand because of the lack of a subject to “carry” the image.
The Ninth Annual Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit is open from noon until 5:00 Saturdays and Sundays in May. The exhibition is located at the Joseph Miller Center, 4811 Catharpin Road, Gainesville, VA 20155.
The OLLI Photo Club was recently named Adult Volunteer Group for 2019 by Fairfax County. (See article in May 3 E-News.)
