Wurst Party Ever

By Marilyn Harriman, Board Member and Diversions Chair

Prost! And come on out for the Wurst Party ever! On Friday, November 1, 12:30 - 2:30, the Diversions Committee is hosting our first annual Oktoberfest at Tallwood Campus. Get ready to tap your feet to Fairfax’s German oompah band, the Blaskapelle Alte Kameraden, and enjoy Bavarian cuisine. If you haven’t registered, you can sign up through your membership portal for special event 1103 until October 29.

The stated $2 fee in the catalog has been waived. Even though there’s no admission fee, we must know how many are coming so we have enough bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, German cake, and beverages.

In addition to food and music, you can test your knowledge about all things German and vie for a prize: a gift certificate to The Swiss Bakery.

Whether you wear traditional lederhosen, your dearest dirndl, or jeans, get ready to have fun with your OLLI friends!

Opportunities to Join the OLLI E-News Editorial Team

By Paul Van Hemel,
E-News Chief Editor

If you love OLLI and are interested in an easy way to contribute a volunteer effort to the organization, here’s an opportunity to do so by becoming a member of the E-News editorial team. By serving for a few hours every four or five weeks as Editor of the Week, you can have a positive impact on OLLI and enjoy a pleasant journalistic experience. We have openings for a couple of new editors.

E-News is one of several OLLI publications that is created using MailChimp software. We will teach you what you need to know to put together an E-News issue. You don’t have to generate content; that is usually submitted by OLLI-member coordinators for committees, clubs, activities, or other OLLI members.

If you are interested and have questions or would like to know more, please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Feel the Joy! See a Show This November.

By Norma Jean Reck, Coordinator, Theater Lovers Group

Seeing the musical theater offerings this November will rejuvenate your spirits. The three plays - 110 in the Shade, Fiddler on the Roof, and Lucky Stiff - will make you laugh out loud, renew your sense of hope, illustrate the importance of community, and allow you to think that dreams can come true.

On Sunday, November 3 at 2pm, join the Theater Lovers Group (TLG) to see Mason Players perform 110 in the Shade at Center for the Arts. Senior tickets are $15 (plus fees). To purchase tickets, phone 703-993-1120. Optional lunch at Oh George. Email Norma at [email protected]
to sign up.

On Saturday, November 9 at 2pm, TLG will see Fiddler on the Roof, performed by Reston Community Players at Reston Center Stage. To purchase Senior tickets for $25, phone 703-390-6188 or go online to
http://www.restonplayers.com. Optional lunch TBD. Email [email protected] to sign up.

On Sunday, November 17 at 2pm, Gay Alper has invited OLLI theater lovers to join her at her table to see Lucky Stiff at the  Church of Good Shepherd, located at 9350 Braddock Road in Burke. Lucky Stiff is a murderous musical farce featuring cabaret style seating. To  purchase tickets, go online to
http://www.GoodShepherdPlayers.com. Email Gay at [email protected] for more information and to sign up for her table.

November, the month of Thanksgiving, is a perfect time to thank all OLLI members who faithfully work so quietly behind the scenes to make all of OLLI's wonderful activities possible for the rest of us, including our publications. We thank you and appreciate you!

Editor’s note: At the author’s request, all words are published unedited, exactly as submitted.

A Child’s Dream

Above the loamy forest floor
A magical world I explore
Glowing mushrooms galore
Reveal mystical lore

A dainty elfin sprite
Floats in gentle flight
Gauzy wings so bright
On my nose alights

Sprinkles magic dust
As my eyes adjust
Mesmerized I watch
Fairies on the march

With shimmering wings
Around mushroom rings
Sparkling joy they bring
Making the forest sing

Thrilled I danced with delight
It was a wondrous night
Alas with the morning light
All the fairies took flight
