Did you know that men over the age of 75 have the highest suicide rate? If you or someone you know are feeling depressed, hopeless, or having thoughts of suicide, tell a healthcare provider, talk to a friend, call the Suicide Prevention Hotline. It’s as easy as dialing 988.

Upcoming New Theater Outing and Theater Exhibit Plus Tour

By Norma Jean Reck, Coordinator, Theater Lovers’ Group

NEW! On Saturday, November 9, Theater Lovers' will attend the 2pm matinee of Fiddler on the Roof, performed by the Reston Community Players at Center Stage in Reston. Who doesn't want to sing and dance along when they hear If I Were a Rich Man or Sunrise, Sunset? Set in 1905 in a small town near Kiev, Fiddler is a heartwarming (and heartbreaking) story of dairyman Teyve and his wife Golda and their efforts to see their five daughters married. Tickets are going fast. Senior tickets are $27 (including fees). Go online to http://www.restonplayers.org to purchase your tickets ASAP. Let Norma know if you will join us for the show and lunch before the show TBD.

The "Change We Want to See": Artists and Social Transformation is being exhibited in Fenwick Library at Mason. On Wednesday, December 4, OLLI will be given a tour of the exhibit, which will be followed by a private tour of selected theater, art, and music artifacts contained in the various Special Collections held by the library but not on display. The exhibit shows Zelda Fishandler's papers from archives at Arena Stage, posters of the international tour of George and Ira Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, and visual art and design relevant to protest and social justice movements from 1968 to 2022. Sign up for Group A 10-12 or Group B 1-3.

To sign up or for more information, email me at [email protected].

Editor’s note: At the author’s request, all words are published unedited, exactly as submitted.

Sloths [Translated from Pilosa]

So the two-footed call us. Some of them
roam the jungle never realizing we are
observing them with scorn, disgust.

They see us and don’t see us
mistaking our mossy green backs
for bird nests.

The knowing ones believe we are lazy,
useless, hence they disdain torpid comrades
as slothful. They made it a mortal sin.

Ha! We sloths perform vital work
even as we lounge among the leafy branches.
We sloths protect the world.

Each time we make our weekly descent
to defecate, the fabric of worldness is rent,
a catastrophe occurs.

The two-footed ones ignore that once
we were huge powerful beasts who
roamed the Earth at will. So beautiful

were we that the gods’ jealousy was aroused.
In their wrath they cursed us, reduced
us to our current modesty, banished us

to live in trees, caused us to host
green algae nourishing their sloth moth
messengers and condemned us
to protect the world.
