Did you read a classic work of literature when you were young and in school and it changed your life? Or were you forced to read an assigned book or story, and it made no sense to you? Well, maybe after a long eventful life, it may be time to revisit or read for the first time some of the great works of the literary arts.
The Classic Literature Club was formed to read and discuss classic texts from world literature. In the past, the club has read works such as Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom, Toni Morrison’s Beloved, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, short stories of John Updike and Flannery O’Connor, and plays by Eugene O’Neill and Arthur Miller. Members choose the works to be discussed. Often, discussions are preceded by recorded lectures from great teachers and scholars.
For the winter term, the club has agreed to read selected poems by Robert Frost and the novel Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley. This laugh-out-loud musical comedy transports you back to the romantic antics of Roman Times and promises 'something for everyone: a comedy tonight.' Former member John West (he joined OLLI in fall 2004), 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Ashburn, Virginia, on November 20, 2024, with his wife of 56 years, Kathie, by his side. He devoted 21 years to the United States Air Force, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.
John was webmaster at OLLI for many years. He was in charge of DocStore and, with Paul Howard and Rod Zumbro, solved many of OLLI's technical glitches. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Fairfax Demaine Funeral Home on January 18, 2025, at 1:00. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, with Military Honors, in 2026. St. Nicholas Day (December 5 or 6)
Also known as the Feast of Saint Nicholas—some Christians honor the birthday of Saint Nicholas who inspired “Santa Claus” and the act of gift-giving. St. Nicholas, however, walked on earth to give to those in need.
Immaculate Conception Day (December 8)
Catholics celebrate the day of Immaculate Conception to honor the Virgin Mary, who is believed to have been born without original sin.
Bodhi Day (December 8)
Also known as Rohatun, this Buddhist tradition honors the day in which the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautauma) is said to have achieved enlightenment. Many Buddhists celebrate it through meditation.
National Human Rights Day (December 10)
On this date in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12)
Mexicans and Mexican-Americans often celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe who, as the patron saint of Mexico, symbolizes patriotism and devotion.
Hanukkah (December 18-26)
The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah begins December 18 and lasts for eight days. As the central part of the Jewish Festival of Lights, it includes the lighting of a nine-branched menorah each night. The ninth candle (shamash) is used to light the others.
Christmas Day (December 25)
This holiday is recognized by Christians as the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ who they believe is the Son of God. The date was chosen by the Roman Catholic Church.
The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS) on Saturday, December 14, in person and via Zoom. The Zoom session opens at 12:45.
Smart Plugs: Preserving Device Batteries—Presented by John Krout
Part 1 of this presentation will introduce you to the features and many uses of low-cost Smart Plugs. These can be controlled remotely by zero-cost apps on your smart phone or tablet and by vocal assistants such as Alexa, Hey Google, or Siri.
Part 2 will show you a way to use a smart plug and its controller app to extend the life of the lithium-ion battery in your smart watch, laptop, and pluggable hybrid electric vehicle. This technique is unusual because it does not rely on any app on the device being charged. It will work on any operating system or brand of device being charged, so long as the charger runs on standard alternating current (AC) electric power.

HP Instant Ink—Presented by John Krout
HP Instant Ink is an ink subscription program for users of HP printers. Not every HP printer is eligible, but many recent models are. HP included in those models a way to interact with a chip built into each subscription ink cartridge. The printer literally uses the Internet to inform HP when an ink cartridge is exhausted. Then HP delivers a replacement. It really paid off for the presenter. The presenter creates a custom month-per-page photo calendar each year to give to relatives and friends. He prints and assembles each calendar at home. In 2021 his ink cost for 24 copies was about $400, and in 2022 about $450. When the presenter obtained an HP Instant Ink subscription in 2023, his cost for the ink to print those calendars fell to about $90. There are some quirks, and some caveats. You will learn about all of that.

Learn in 30: Will It Still Open? Maintenance of Old Electronic Records —Presented by Patty Davis
In the past, most records were maintained on paper. Although this meant that they had to be lugged from location to location, for the most part, there was no concern that they would be able to be read in the future. Nowadays most records are kept electronically from bank statements to family photos.
Starting in July of 2024, even the US Government has directed agencies to no longer produce paper, and the National Archives will not accept paper records directly from agencies.
With all of these records now created and maintained electronically, it raises the question, Can users still access records when they are 10, 20, or more years old? Patty Davis, former Fredericksburg PC User's Group President and Certified Archivist will explore the history of electronic records and steps that the average person can take to ensure that in the future your electronic records will still be accessible.

For the Wednesday, November 20, conversation, Team Bloch is proposing the topic: Post-Pandemic Life-Style Adjustments.
Our November 20 discussion will ask the question(s): "How has your life changed due to the Pandemic?" For many of us, adjustments that we made in 2020-2021 have continued to define our daily lives now in 2024. (Some people would object to the "post-pandemic" phrase; they say that we are still quite vulnerable to the Covid-19 virus, and they live accordingly.) There are a few people still wearing masks in crowded environments. Some are still dependent on grocery home delivery. Others have more or less gone back to our previous lifestyles. But movie theaters are still recovering their in-person audiences, and many digital workers are still in hybrid mode. OLLI members are more likely to zoom into presentations, rather than visiting our on-site facilities. The Zoom app was not important before the Covid "invasion," but it certainly is a big part of our lives now. What has changed in your life and what has not changed? And are you happy with the changes or not?
Our social conversations are held on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 via Zoom. The sessions are fully participatory, and all are welcome to join us. Theater Art Imitates Life in Upcoming Theater Events

The communal experience of enjoying live theater together as a member of an audience is very rewarding. It renews our spirits, reminds us of our shared humanity, and helps us figure out who we are.
Shawshank Redemption is a story of hope, friendship, and perseverance, despite brutal situations. TLG will see the 2pm performance of Shawshank Redemption on Sunday, December 1 at NextStop Theater in Herndon. To purchase senior rate tickets for $42.50, phone 703-481-5930 x1. We will have an optional 11:30am lunch at nearby Cooper Hawk Winery and Restaurant.
NOTE: Rescheduled day, date, and time to see "The Change We Want to See," currently on display at Mason's Fenwick Library. This exhibit, which examines the relationship between artists and social movements, uses artifacts such as sheet music, posters, and archival documents from Mason Libraries Special Collections Research Center to explore the theme. TLG will tour the exhibit on Tuesday, December 3 from 1 to 3pm. The tour will also include a private tour of more artifacts from other collections not on display. Free admission. On my many trips to the kitchen
in the middle of night
I rely on the light from my
hold-over Christmas lights
at the front of the house.
I also rely on familiar objects
in the mid light/dark
to keep from stumbling.
One guiding object in the entrance to the kitchen
is an old chair with string and glue
holding its legs together.
One night I made one of my
many trips to the refrigerator
and there was no chair there.
I had used it for a big dinner
the night before.
I made my nocturnal trip safely
but this caused me to reflect on
my reliance on the familiar
and steady to keep my spirits up:
hot water that comes when our tap turns on
the daily newspapers delivered every day
long-time friends of 50 years or more
and, above all, my loving and supporting
companion for 63 years.
As friends and family go on the Great Beyond
I hang on to what I have
and say a prayer of gratitude.

The OLLI Board of Directors met on Friday, October 18, at 10:00 with 14 Directors, Jennifer Disano (Executive Director), and 11 OLLI members/staff in TA‑1 and on Zoom.
President Debbie Engleson encouraged the Board and OLLI members to attend the OLLI Town Hall meeting on Friday, November 1, followed by the OLLI Oktoberfest party with a German style Oompah band.
Healthcare Advisory Working Group (HAWG) chair Michele Romano noted that the group will continue releasing snippets on health news through E-News and E-Blast.
OLLI Executive Director, Jennifer Disano, recognized that our membership has stabilized at a current 939 members. New members using the first-year $300 promotion are given a voucher to reduce the second-year membership to $375. Jennifer also noted that due to longtime volunteer retirements, we need volunteers for the curriculum committees in all subject areas. The staff has assumed some of the roles temporarily.
OLLI Treasurer Dick Crawford reported that we are on target for both expenditures and income. He will present the proposed 2025 budget at the November Board meeting for discussion.
Governance Committee Chair Peter Ansoff recognized Marilyn Harriman’s extensive report on the election process and recommendations. After three meetings, the committee recommended two resolutions to the Board. A synopsis of resolutions that were passed is:
Each year the Nominating Committee will recommend five candidates to replace those Board members vacating their positions.
OLLI members are limited to serving two three-year terms on the Board.
Before closing, Board member Toni Acton recognized that this fall we have 92 new OLLI members, whose badges carry a GREEN DOT. Please recognize and welcome them into the OLLI membership.
All members are welcome at our next OLLI Board meeting in Tallwood TA‑1 or on Zoom at 10:00 on Friday, November 15. “Come one, come all” to sign up and attend our OLLI holiday party at the Fairfax Country Club on Friday, December 6, 11:30-2:30.
The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS) on Saturday, November 16, in person and via Zoom. The Zoom session opens at 12:45.

Windows 11 isn’t new, but lots of folks haven’t taken the plunge yet. But, in less than a year, Microsoft will drop support for this version (or you’ll have to pay $30 a year for security updates for a limited additional time.) Here’s an opportunity to learn about some of new features and how to use this version of Windows. Your old computer might just expire tomorrow and you’ll need to jump into the Win11 world!

Amelia Draper of NBC 4 to Speak November 13

Amelia Draper, a meteorologist with NBC’s Storm Team4, will speak at OLLI on Wednesday, November 13. Her talk will include how forecasts are made, what goes into a television forecast, and trends being seen on television. Be prepared with your weather or climate questions! Her forecasts can be seen during the midday and evening editions of News4 and on NBC Washington digital properties.
Amelia joined News4 in March 2013. A native of Frederick, MD, she had wanted to forecast the weather in Washington, DC, since she started studying meteorology at Penn State University. In fact, she graduated from college early so she could start working.
Her first job was with CNET in State College, PA. While forecasting the weather there, she became very familiar with weather phenomena such as lake-effect snow, which helped her land her next job as weekend meteorologist for WJET/WFXP in Erie, PA. Erie recorded its second snowiest winter on record during her first year there. From there, she joined the morning shift at WIVB-WNLO in Buffalo.
The opportunity to be closer to family and friends brought her back to the DC area as a member of Washington’s NBC weather team. She brought extensive experience covering snowy winters, spring storms, and summer heat.

November 1 is All Saint’s Day, a Christian holiday, as well as the Mexican holiday called Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos. The Hindu faith may observe Diwali at the end of October or early November. On November 11 we celebrate Veterans Day, which was initially called Armistice Day. It was first recognized in 1938 as a national holiday, but the name was changed in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars.
November is also Native American Heritage Month. As part of a month-long series of activities, Starr Chief Eagle will be performing Hoop Dancing on November 29 at the National Museum of the American Indian.
On Thanksgiving Day, Americans celebrate not only the harvest, but also friends and family. Enjoy!
She handed me a box, wrapped with care,
and ribboned in rich, shiny taffeta.

Zahra was a student, I, her graduate advisor.
Her family emigrated from Afghanistan
fifteen years ago.
I raised the top of the red silk-lined box.
Inside, I saw a circular disc of concentric blue tones.
Attached was a finely-tied sisal rope,
strung with dark blue beads --
a wall hanging.
Each exterior circle of the disc was sumptuously adorned
with complex shapes of interconnecting
lapis lazuli, black onyx, and aquamarine stones.
A milky-white round protrusion graced the center of the disc,
the middle of which held an aquamarine orb with an intense black “pupil.”
The impression: an eye of terror.
It was disquieting, disturbing, yet exquisitely alluring.
Would I want to hang this strange object
in my home?
“What is this?” I asked Zahra.
It’s an evil eye – to repel negative energy and provide protection to a household.
In my home country,
it’s been an important cultural object
for many hundreds of years.
I thought you would appreciate it.
She smiled, her eyes shining.
I now understood the sincerity and trust, affection and appreciation
that this “evil” eye
expressed to me.
I would hang it prominently.

Prost! And come on out for the Wurst Party ever! On Friday, November 1, 12:30 - 2:30, the Diversions Committee is hosting our first annual Oktoberfest at Tallwood Campus. Get ready to tap your feet to Fairfax’s German oompah band, the Blaskapelle Alte Kameraden, and enjoy Bavarian cuisine. If you haven’t registered, you can sign up through your membership portal for special event 1103 until October 29. The stated $2 fee in the catalog has been waived. Even though there’s no admission fee, we must know how many are coming so we have enough bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, German cake, and beverages.
In addition to food and music, you can test your knowledge about all things German and vie for a prize: a gift certificate to The Swiss Bakery.
Whether you wear traditional lederhosen, your dearest dirndl, or jeans, get ready to have fun with your OLLI friends!
Opportunities to Join the OLLI E-News Editorial Team

If you love OLLI and are interested in an easy way to contribute a volunteer effort to the organization, here’s an opportunity to do so by becoming a member of the E-News editorial team. By serving for a few hours every four or five weeks as Editor of the Week, you can have a positive impact on OLLI and enjoy a pleasant journalistic experience. We have openings for a couple of new editors.
E-News is one of several OLLI publications that is created using MailChimp software. We will teach you what you need to know to put together an E-News issue. You don’t have to generate content; that is usually submitted by OLLI-member coordinators for committees, clubs, activities, or other OLLI members.

Seeing the musical theater offerings this November will rejuvenate your spirits. The three plays - 110 in the Shade, Fiddler on the Roof, and Lucky Stiff - will make you laugh out loud, renew your sense of hope, illustrate the importance of community, and allow you to think that dreams can come true.
On Sunday, November 3 at 2pm, join the Theater Lovers Group (TLG) to see Mason Players perform 110 in the Shade at Center for the Arts. Senior tickets are $15 (plus fees). To purchase tickets, phone 703-993-1120. Optional lunch at Oh George. Email Norma at [email protected] to sign up.

Upcoming New Theater Outing and Theater Exhibit Plus Tour

NEW! On Saturday, November 9, Theater Lovers' will attend the 2pm matinee of Fiddler on the Roof, performed by the Reston Community Players at Center Stage in Reston. Who doesn't want to sing and dance along when they hear If I Were a Rich Man or Sunrise, Sunset? Set in 1905 in a small town near Kiev, Fiddler is a heartwarming (and heartbreaking) story of dairyman Teyve and his wife Golda and their efforts to see their five daughters married. Tickets are going fast. Senior tickets are $27 (including fees). Go online to http://www.restonplayers.org to purchase your tickets ASAP. Let Norma know if you will join us for the show and lunch before the show TBD.
The "Change We Want to See": Artists and Social Transformation is being exhibited in Fenwick Library at Mason. On Wednesday, December 4, OLLI will be given a tour of the exhibit, which will be followed by a private tour of selected theater, art, and music artifacts contained in the various Special Collections held by the library but not on display. The exhibit shows Zelda Fishandler's papers from archives at Arena Stage, posters of the international tour of George and Ira Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, and visual art and design relevant to protest and social justice movements from 1968 to 2022. Sign up for Group A 10-12 or Group B 1-3.
Long-time OLLI member Dr. Edward Koenigsberg, M.D., died on October 10, 2024. He received undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Maryland and maintained a private practice in pediatrics for several years. He had a long career in the Air Force and the federal government.
In retirement, he audited classes at George Mason University before joining OLLI. His OLLI friends will miss his insights and wit. His funeral was held October 13, with interment at King David Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Further information is available at this link.
