Board Meeting Highlights, November 15

By Robert W. Heyer, BOD Secretary

President Debbie Engleson called the OLLI Board of Directors meeting to order at 10:00 on Friday, 15 November 2024, in room TA-1 at Tallwood; present were thirteen Board members (including four officers) and the Executive Director.

The president noted OLLI closings for the holidays and stated that the OLLI holiday party had more than 100 people (including  staff) registered to attend.

Executive Director Jennifer Disano reported that OLLI membership is stabilizing with about 950 current members. She noted that OLLI has given $20,000 in scholarships to Mason students, helping maintain interest among Mason instructors to teach at OLLI. There were 160 classes plus clubs and other activities at OLLI during the fall term.

Treasurer Richard Crawford reported that OLLI expenditures and income are tracking well. IRS Form 990 was reviewed by the Finance Committee and Treasurer to meet the annual deadline. The budget will continue to have a reserve line for potential equipment replacement for our classrooms.

Under New Business, the Board discussed a resolution to approve the 2024 OLLI tax return (IRS Form 990); the resolution was tabled pending Board review of the form. In other new business, OLLI anticipates contracting with Silverstone Corporation (owner of several retirement communities in Northern Virginia) to provide 15 classes annually for $45,000; courses and instructors are to be determined.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:00.

Make 2025 the Year You Teach at OLLI Mason

By Camille Hodges, OLLI Board Member and Chair of the Humanities and Social  Sciences/Current Events Program Planning  Group

If you are still looking for resolutions to make in the New Year, look no further. Take the challenge and teach a course at OLLI, specifically in Humanities and Social Sciences/Current Events. Some suggested topics include, but are not limited to: multicultural topics, intergenerational topics, the future of American education, the Pullman porters influence in American history, the future of politics in America, the psychology of surviving politics, or your own course idea. Classes continue to be in-person, virtual, and hybrid.

Remember, when schools are closed due to the weather, OLLI classes are cancelled.

Hopefully, you will consider teaching a class in 2025. Currently, we are looking at the following schedule:
- summer 2025 course proposals are due: January 27
- fall 2025 course proposals are due: April 7.

Click this link for an OLLI course proposal form.

Thanks, and happy teaching!

Upcoming Theater Events - Something for Everyone

By Norma Jean Reck, Coordinator, Theater Lovers' Group

On Sunday, February 2 at 2pm, the Theater Lovers' Group (TLG) will attend Mason's student performance of Broadway's Prince: The Musicals of Hal Prince at the Harris Theater in Fairfax. If you enjoyed seeing the Phantom of the Opera, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Westside Story, Cabaret, and Sweeney Todd, then you will love this celebratory musical salute to the legendary Hal Prince, who changed musical theater on Broadway forever. Senior tickets are $15, plus a fee. Phone 703-993-1120 for tickets. Optional preshow lunch will be at Oh George at noon.

On Saturday, February 8 at 2pm, TLG will return to 1stStage in Tysons to see The Lake Effect. It takes place in Cleveland in a small Indian restaurant during a snowstorm when an Indian American brother and sister reunite after being estranged for years. A moving story of family, relationships, secrets, and finding a way forward. Tickets are $25/$40/$55. Phone 703-854-1856. Tell them you are with OLLI Theater Group. Preshow lunch TBD.

On Sunday, February 16, TLG will go to the Creative Cauldron's new home next to Whole Foods on corner of Route 7 and Lee Highway to see Steel Magnolias. This heartfelt and hilarious story takes place in Louisiana, specifically in Truvy's Beauty Salon where all the ladies gather to chat, gossip, and bond. Tickets are $40 (group rate with 10 people). Email Norma if you are interested in going. When we get ten people, we will purchase the tickets. Preshow lunch TBD.

When you register for classes, remember to sign up for the Theater Lovers' Group to keep getting emails about TLG events. If you have any questions, email me at [email protected]. Everyone is invited to join TLG - a very engaged and fun group.

I found the Virgin Mary waiting inside a mussel shell

Arms resting gently by her sides
palms open holding the space
an emanation of calm
filling her luminous blue visage

Yes, it was her

She was quiet and I wondered
if she’d softly sing
what wisdom she’d offer
a perilous world

She remained silent prodding me to look deeper

In 2,000 years - she’d witnessed much
devastation roiling round her patient presence
her merciful countenance offering
a raft of comfort

I wouldn’t call myself a believer

Still - I saw her in the shell and
didn’t look away

She pulsed with acceptance and promise

Shopping for and Buying Hearing Aids
Learn in 30: Flight Radar 24

By Paul Howard , OPCUG Program Chair

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), on Saturday, January 18, in person and via Zoom. The Zoom session opens at 12:45.

Shopping for and Buying Hearing Aids—Presented by Gabe Goldberg
Over several years, hearing tests suggested that I was heading for using hearing aids. When the time arrived, researching device and provider choices was more complicated than I had realized. I evaluated several brands and models at very different price points and found a service that saved me about $2500 with only a very modest reduction in service―which I still don't fully understand.

This experience occurred just as Direct-to-Consumer devices were becoming available, so I can't discuss these. But having been served by a practice with Doctors of Audiology (people with Au.D. credentials), I would be reluctant to make a self-service selection and setup, or even work with a lesser-qualified licensed hearing aid provider.

Buying hearing aids involves multiple tradeoffs and significant expense. The most useful advice may be to do plenty of research and not immediately purchase the first devices suggested by the first provider visited. Those may be the best choice but evaluate others.

Bonus: This will be a duet with my Au.D., who'll present the provider perspective on hearing aid devices.

In developing and supporting technology, Gabe has written and presented for diverse audiences, from consumers to industry experts. He's also involved in DC-area and national tech groups helping people use, enjoy, and benefit from these modern marvels.

Learn in 30: Flight Radar 24—Presented by Bill Walsh

Bill will demonstrate and discuss new features of this aircraft tracking program.

See full details on this meeting by clicking here. For information on the Computer Club, see the OPCUG Website. OPCUG dues are $5 and are now due for 2025 (and 2024, if you didn’t get around to paying last year!)      —see http://olligmu.org/opcug/comm.html for details on making payment.

To attend via Zoom’s cloud meeting service, beginning at 12:45, please click this link to join the meeting and use passcode 952879 (Note: enter passcode with NO spaces) or enter meeting ID 8124 5733 563 in the Zoom app and use the above passcode (preferred method), or dial in at 301-715-8592.

Wednesday Team Bloch Conversation—January 8
By Brenda Bloch-Young and Doris Bloch, Co‑Moderators
Our topic for discussion on Wednesday, January 8, is Poetry.

Poetry―literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively, or as a genre of literature.

Poetry―literature that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm.

Is a poem a little machine? A firework? An echo? A dream?

Above are a few definitions of poetry, taken from the Internet. But they describe attributes, rather than definitions, in my opinion. Which, if any, do you agree with? Can you suggest a better definition? Are you a poetry lover? Or do you wish that you could appreciate the genre more fully?

Let's share our opinions about poetry via the 24/7 Chat Line on January 8th at 4:00. No need to sign up – just zoom on in. We hope that some of our OLLI members who enjoy reading and/or writing poetry will join us.

Volunteer for the OLLI E‑News Editorial Team!

By
Paul Van Hemel, E‑News Chief Editor

We need a couple of new editors! It’s not a full-time job—it’s a great way to support OLLI with only a little effort every few weeks. By serving one day every four or five weeks as Editor of the Week, you can have a positive impact on OLLI and enjoy a pleasant journalistic experience. We’ll even give you a button that you can wear on your OLLI badge to celebrate your contribution!

E‑News is one of several OLLI publications that is created using MailChimp software. We will teach you what you need to know to be able to put together an E-News issue. You don’t have to generate content, which generally is submitted by OLLI-member coordinators for committees, clubs, and activities. If you are interested and have questions or would like to know more, please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Where You Wrote
Dylan Thomas in Wales

At the edge of town
I cross a cobbled bridge
over the mossy creek
where water threads
between stones
and carries your voice.

Following the long quay
where gulls linger
as fishermen cast long rods
into the green sea.

Keeping to the gravel path
whose curve reveals a broad view
across the lapping water
before turning up into trees.

At the top of the hill
the little boathouse rests quietly
green with an off-centered door.

Inside, your dusty tweed jacket is draped
over the chair pushed back from the desk
scattered with papers you left as if gone
for a short stroll.

I peer out the windows
at your view of the bay
and white dotted slopes of distant farmland.

Here the ritual of sea, boats,
and herons called your name
and white tips of perennial waves
spoke of youth and aging and, always,
of coming change.

All that pulled you back time and again
to this place that harbored the universe.

Classic Literature Club

By Michael Mason, Classic Literature Club Coordinator

Did you read a classic work of literature when you were young and in school and it changed your life? Or were you forced to read an assigned book or story, and it made no sense to you? Well, maybe after a long eventful life, it may be time to revisit or read for the first time some of the great works of the literary arts.

The Classic Literature Club was formed to read and discuss classic texts from world literature. In the past, the club has read works such as Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom, Toni Morrison’s Beloved, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, short stories of John Updike and Flannery O’Connor, and plays by Eugene O’Neill and Arthur Miller. Members choose the works to be discussed. Often, discussions are preceded by recorded lectures from great teachers and scholars.

For the winter term, the club has agreed to read selected poems by Robert Frost and the novel Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley. So, join our club and read and discuss some of the classics. They just might change your life! For more info about the club, contact club coordinator Michael Mason ([email protected]).

Ring in the New Year by Seeing a Musical Classic and a Big, Bawdy, Bodacious Musical Comedy?

By Norma Jean Reck, Coordinator, Theater Lovers’ Group

Join the fun-loving Theater Lovers' Group (TLG) on Sunday, January 5, 2025, to see the 2pm matinee of Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Signature Theater in Arlington. This laugh-out-loud musical comedy transports you back to the romantic antics of Roman Times and promises 'something for everyone: a comedy tonight.' You might even leave the theater singing some tunes. What a great way to begin the New Year.

To purchase tickets, go to http://www.sigtheatre.org or phone 703-820-9771. Select your seat and price range.

We will have a pre-show lunch at a nearby restaurant. Feel free to invite guests who need not be OLLI members.

To sign up for the lunch or for more information, email me at [email protected].

Just added: At 8pm on Saturday, January 4, TLG goes to the Workhouse Arts Theater to see The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Gay Alper will take the lead for this night out. We'll have dinner before seeing this performance of an unforgettable classic whose sweeping score and powerful story make it a musical classic. Go to workhousearts.org to purchase tickets ($35/$40). Email Gay to sign up and for details [email protected].

Editor’s note: At the author’s request, all words are published unedited, exactly as submitted.

Beer, Hot Tub and the Gnat

Crisp fall twilight sky filled with orange and gray clouds
        Painting the cove’s flat water
        Cold glass of Miller Light
Hot tub at 104, jets on max
Time to untie back muscles
Enjoy a blue heron watching for dinner
Start my first gulp but stop short
         “Damn, a gnat
         Not wasting this beer
Just fish the little bugger out
         It’s alcohol; he’s purified”
Carefully use pointer finger to raise the corpse
Gently touch him as he latches to my finger
“Wait, he’s moving, he appears to wobble
He’s drunk. The little guy has had his fill.”
Take two more big swigs and watch him
Can’t tell which is front or back
Not trying to get away, seems content
“Hey little buddy. How’s been your day?
Mine’s been a pisser; you don’t want to know but
         tell you anyway”
Wife appears, “Who were you just talking to? Dinner is almost ready.”
“My little drinking buddy, he’s had too much to fly
Don’t know what to do with him”
“Well he can’t come to dinner and I could use some help.”
What to do?
“Crunching you isn’t right, flicking you off my finger is extreme.
Tell you what, left a little beer in the bottom. I’ll put you
on the side of the glass. You decide. Dry out and fly away.
Go down to the beer and enjoy your end. Your choice.”
"But you can't come to dinner."

December Notes on Diversity

By Camille Hodges, OLLI Board Member and Chair of the Humanities and Social Sciences/Current Events Program Planning Group

Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day.
           — Author Unknown

St. Nicholas Day (December 5 or 6)
Also known as the Feast of Saint Nicholas—some Christians honor the birthday of Saint Nicholas who inspired “Santa Claus” and the act of gift-giving. St. Nicholas, however, walked on earth to give to those in need.

Immaculate Conception Day (December 8)
Catholics celebrate the day of Immaculate Conception to honor the Virgin Mary, who is believed to have been born without original sin.

Bodhi Day (December 8)
Also known as Rohatun, this Buddhist tradition honors the day in which the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautauma) is said to have achieved enlightenment. Many Buddhists celebrate it through meditation.

National Human Rights Day (December 10)
On this date in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12)
Mexicans and Mexican-Americans often celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe who, as the patron saint of Mexico, symbolizes patriotism and devotion.

Hanukkah (December 18-26)
The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah begins December 18 and lasts for eight days. As the central part of the Jewish Festival of Lights, it includes the lighting of a nine-branched menorah each night. The ninth candle (shamash) is used to light the others.

Christmas Day (December 25)
This holiday is recognized by Christians as the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ who they believe is the Son of God. The date was chosen by the Roman Catholic Church.

Smart Plugs: Preserving Device Batteries
Learn in 30: The Economy and Considerations for Investors

By Paul Howard , OPCUG Program Chair

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS) on Saturday, December 14, in person and via Zoom. The Zoom session opens at 12:45.

Smart Plugs: Preserving Device Batteries—Presented by John Krout
Part 1 of this presentation will introduce you to the features and many uses of low-cost Smart Plugs. These can be controlled remotely by zero-cost apps on your smart phone or tablet and by vocal assistants such as Alexa, Hey Google, or Siri.

Part 2 will show you a way to use a smart plug and its controller app to extend the life of the lithium-ion battery in your smart watch, laptop, and pluggable hybrid electric vehicle. This technique is unusual because it does not rely on any app on the device being charged. It will work on any operating system or brand of device being charged, so long as the charger runs on standard alternating current (AC) electric power.

John Krout is a regular presenter at our meetings on a wide range of computer, technology, and photography topics, and author of many articles for the PATACS Posts newsletter.

Learn in 30: The Economy and Considerations for Investors—Presented by Cory Saylor
This presentation will give a general economic update, where we are and how we feel heading into 2025. Some high points: the US economy remains resilient; inflation has continued to moderate; the Fed has started its rate-cutting journey. Consideration for investors will be discussed, with audience questions encouraged.

Cory Saylor, CFP® is a senior portfolio manager with TIAA Trust, N.A. (“TIAA Trust”) in Northern Virginia. He is responsible for designing and managing customized investment portfolios to help meet the financial objectives of high-net-worth clients. Cory has nearly 30 years of experience managing money for high-net-worth individuals as well as for institutions.

See full details on this meeting by clicking here. For information on the Computer Club, see the OPCUG Website. OPCUG dues are $5 and are now due for 2024 (and 2023, if you didn’t get around to paying last year!)—see http://olligmu.org/opcug/comm.html for details on making payment.

To attend via Zoom’s cloud meeting service, beginning at 12:45, please click this link to join the meeting and use passcode 045284 (Note: enter passcode with NO spaces) or enter meeting ID 897 3557 7784 in the Zoom app and use the above passcode (preferred method), or dial in at 301-715-8592.

Approaching Solstice

smoke grey clouds
gently cover the icy blue
winter sunset

stinging winds blow
the last of the autumn leaves
round the empty street

too cold for walking
I peer through the glass
as night closes in on me

aching to commune with
the hidden part of myself
that thrives in shadows

longing for the rest that
is promised but fearful of the
coming gale of grieving winds

I descend into the darkness
whispering sprits appear
Venus rises like a twinkling star

Settling in to the comfort
of this longest night
I drift down like the snow

By Camille Hodges, OLLI Board Member and Chair of the Humanities and Social Sciences/Current Events Program Planning Group

HP Instant Ink
Will It Still Open? Maintenance of Old Electronic Records
PC and Tech Support Clinic

By Paul Howard, OPCUG Program Chair

The Computer Club (OLLI Personal Computer User Group, or OPCUG) will meet with its partner, the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS) on Saturday, November 16, in person and via Zoom. The Zoom session opens at 12:45. (Note: The previously announced program on Windows 11 has been rescheduled to January 18. Below is the updated program for November 16.)

HP Instant Ink—Presented by John Krout
HP Instant Ink is an ink subscription program for users of HP printers. Not every HP printer is eligible, but many recent models are. HP included in those models a way to interact with a chip built into each subscription ink cartridge. The printer literally uses the Internet to inform HP when an ink cartridge is exhausted. Then HP delivers a replacement. It really paid off for the presenter. The presenter creates a custom month-per-page photo calendar each year to give to relatives and friends. He prints and assembles each calendar at home. In 2021 his ink cost for 24 copies was about $400, and in 2022 about $450. When the presenter obtained an HP Instant Ink subscription in 2023, his cost for the ink to print those calendars fell to about $90. There are some quirks, and some caveats. You will learn about all of that.

John Krout is a regular presenter at our meetings, and a frequent author of PATACS newsletter articles.

Learn in 30: Will It Still Open? Maintenance of Old Electronic Records —Presented by Patty Davis

In the past, most records were maintained on paper. Although this meant that they had to be lugged from location to location, for the most part, there was no concern that they would be able to be read in the future. Nowadays most records are kept electronically from bank statements to family photos.

Starting in July of 2024, even the US Government has directed agencies to no longer produce paper, and the National Archives will not accept paper records directly from agencies.

With all of these records now created and maintained electronically, it raises the question, Can users still access records when they are 10, 20, or more years old? Patty Davis, former Fredericksburg PC User's Group President and Certified Archivist will explore the history of electronic records and steps that the average person can take to ensure that in the future your electronic records will still be accessible.

This session will include a PC and Tech Support Clinic in the Annex. You must register in advance for the clinic, and be a member of OPCUG or PATACS to receive assistance from our tech helpers. Go to the Clinic Link: https://www.patacs.org/clinicpat.html.

Wednesday Team Bloch Conversation—
November 20
By Brenda Bloch-Young and Doris Bloch, Co‑Moderators
For the Wednesday, November 20, conversation, Team Bloch is proposing the topic:
Post-Pandemic Life-Style Adjustments.

Our November 20 discussion will ask the question(s): "How has your life changed due to the Pandemic?" For many of us, adjustments that we made in 2020-2021 have continued to define our daily lives now in 2024. (Some people would object to the "post-pandemic" phrase; they say that we are still quite vulnerable to the Covid-19 virus, and they live accordingly.) There are a few people still wearing masks in crowded environments. Some are still dependent on grocery home delivery. Others have more or less gone back to our previous lifestyles. But movie theaters are still recovering their in-person audiences, and many digital workers are still in hybrid mode. OLLI members are more likely to zoom into presentations, rather than visiting our on-site facilities. The Zoom app was not important before the Covid "invasion," but it certainly is a big part of our lives now. What has changed in your life and what has not changed? And are you happy with the changes or not?

Our social conversations are held on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 via Zoom. The sessions are fully participatory, and all are welcome to join us. You can find the Zoom link in the daily schedule sent out by the OLLI office every Wednesday morning. There is no sign-up required; just log in to the 24/7 Chat Line
.

Theater Art Imitates Life in Upcoming Theater Events

By Norma Jean Reck, Coordinator, Theater Lovers’ Group

The communal experience of enjoying live theater together as a member of an audience is very rewarding. It renews our spirits, reminds us of our shared humanity, and helps us figure out who we are.

Shawshank Redemption is a story of hope, friendship, and perseverance, despite brutal situations. TLG will see the 2pm performance of Shawshank Redemption on Sunday, December 1 at NextStop Theater in Herndon. To purchase senior rate tickets for $42.50, phone 703-481-5930 x1. We will have an optional 11:30am lunch at nearby Cooper Hawk Winery and Restaurant.

NOTE: Rescheduled day, date, and time to see "The Change We Want to See," currently on display at Mason's Fenwick Library. This exhibit, which examines the relationship between artists and social movements, uses artifacts such as sheet music, posters, and archival documents from Mason Libraries Special Collections Research Center to explore the theme. TLG will tour the exhibit on Tuesday, December 3 from 1 to 3pm. The tour will also include a private tour of more artifacts from other collections not on display. Free admission. Garage parking nearby.

NEW: TLG will attend the December 14, Saturday, 2pm matinee performance of The Christmas Belles, performed by Prince William Little Theatre at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. If we have a group of eight people, tickets are $18. Otherwise, senior tickets are $20 plus $4 fee. Email me [email protected] if you want to go. Christmas Belles, set in a small Texas town, is a Southern-Fried Yuletide Comedy guaranteed to put you into a festive holiday mood. It's all about a surly Santa, three feuding sisters, and an Elvis impersonator. Optional lunch at nearby Katerina's Greek Cuisine.

Questions? Email Norma at [email protected].

Editor’s note: At the author’s request, all words are published unedited, exactly as submitted.

The Chair Was Not There

On my many trips to the kitchen
in the middle of night
I rely on the light from my
hold-over Christmas lights
at the front of the house.

I also rely on familiar objects
in the mid light/dark
to keep from stumbling.

One guiding object in the entrance to the kitchen
is an old chair with string and glue
holding its legs together.

One night I made one of my
many trips to the refrigerator
and there was no chair there.
I had used it for a big dinner
the night before.

I made my nocturnal trip safely
but this caused me to reflect on
my reliance on the familiar
and steady to keep my spirits up:

hot water that comes when our tap turns on
the daily newspapers delivered every day
long-time friends of 50 years or more
and, above all, my loving and supporting
         companion for 63 years.

As friends and family go on the Great Beyond
I hang on to what I have
and say a prayer of gratitude.

Notes from October 18 Board of Directors Meeting

By Bob Heyer, Secretary

The OLLI Board of Directors met on Friday, October 18, at 10:00 with 14 Directors, Jennifer Disano (Executive Director), and 11 OLLI members/staff in TA‑1 and on Zoom.

President Debbie Engleson encouraged the Board and OLLI members to attend the OLLI Town Hall meeting on Friday, November 1, followed by the OLLI Oktoberfest party with a German style Oompah band.

Healthcare Advisory Working Group (HAWG) chair Michele Romano noted that the group will continue releasing snippets on health news through E-News and E-Blast.

OLLI Executive Director, Jennifer Disano, recognized that our membership has stabilized at a current 939 members. New members using the first-year $300 promotion are given a voucher to reduce the second-year membership to $375. Jennifer also noted that due to longtime volunteer retirements, we need volunteers for the curriculum committees in all subject areas. The staff has assumed some of the roles temporarily.

OLLI Treasurer Dick Crawford reported that we are on target for both expenditures and income. He will present the proposed 2025 budget at the November Board meeting for discussion.

Governance Committee Chair Peter Ansoff recognized Marilyn Harriman’s extensive report on the election process and recommendations. After three meetings, the committee recommended two resolutions to the Board. A synopsis of resolutions that were passed is:
  1. Each year the Nominating Committee will recommend five candidates to replace those Board members vacating their positions.
  2. OLLI members are limited to serving two three-year terms on the Board.
Before closing, Board member Toni Acton recognized that this fall we have 92 new OLLI members, whose badges carry a GREEN DOT. Please recognize and welcome them into the OLLI membership.

All members are welcome at our next OLLI Board meeting in Tallwood TA‑1 or on Zoom at 10:00 on Friday, November 15.  “Come one, come all” to sign up and attend our OLLI holiday party at the Fairfax Country Club on Friday, December 6, 11:30-2:30.

Wrestling with Windows 11—Presented by Charlie Bosch
Windows 11 isn’t new, but lots of folks haven’t taken the plunge yet. But, in less than a year, Microsoft will drop support for this version (or you’ll have to pay $30 a year for security updates for a limited additional time.) Here’s an opportunity to learn about some of new features and how to use this version of Windows. Your old computer might just expire tomorrow and you’ll need to jump into the Win11 world!

In the past, most records were maintained on paper. Although this meant that they had to be lugged from location to location, for the most part, there was no concern that they would be able to be read in the future. Today most records—from bank statements to family photos—are kept electronically.

Starting in July of 2024, even the US Government directed agencies to no longer produce paper, and the National Archives will not accept paper records directly from agencies. With these records now created and maintained on digital media, it raises the question, "Can users still access records that are 10, 20, or more years old?" Patty Davis, former Fredericksburg PC User's Group president and Certified Archivist will explore the history of electronic records and steps that the average person can take to ensure that in the future your electronic records will still be accessible.

This session will include a PC and Tech Support Clinic in the Annex. You must register in advance for the clinic, and be a member of OPCUG or PATACS to receive assistance from our tech helpers. Go to the Clinic Link: https://www.patacs.org/clinicpat.html.

Amelia Draper of NBC 4 to Speak November 13

By Shannon Morrow, Lead Program Associate

Amelia Draper, a meteorologist with NBC’s Storm Team4, will speak at OLLI on Wednesday, November 13. Her talk will include how forecasts are made, what goes into a television forecast, and trends being seen on television. Be prepared with your weather or climate questions! Her forecasts can be seen during the midday and evening editions of News4 and on NBC Washington digital properties.

Amelia joined News4 in March 2013. A native of Frederick, MD, she had wanted to forecast the weather in Washington, DC, since she started studying meteorology at Penn State University. In fact, she graduated from college early so she could start working.

Her first job was with CNET in State College, PA. While forecasting the weather there, she became very familiar with weather phenomena such as lake-effect snow, which helped her land her next job as weekend meteorologist for WJET/WFXP in Erie, PA. Erie recorded its second snowiest winter on record during her first year there. From there, she joined the morning shift at WIVB-WNLO in Buffalo.

The opportunity to be closer to family and friends brought her back to the DC area as a member of Washington’s NBC weather team. She brought extensive experience covering snowy winters, spring storms, and summer heat.

Highlights of November: A Time to Reflect

By Camille Hodges, OLLI Board Member and Chair of the Humanities and Social Sciences/Current Events Program Planning Group

November 1 is All Saint’s Day, a Christian holiday, as well as the Mexican holiday called Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos. The Hindu faith may observe Diwali at the end of October or early November. On November 11 we celebrate Veterans Day, which was initially called Armistice Day. It was first recognized in 1938 as a national holiday, but the name was changed in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars.

November is also Native American Heritage Month. As part of a month-long series of activities, Starr Chief Eagle will be performing Hoop Dancing on November 29 at the National Museum of the American Indian.

On Thanksgiving Day, Americans celebrate not only the harvest, but also friends and family. Enjoy!

Token of Gratitude

She handed me a box, wrapped with care,
and ribboned in rich, shiny taffeta.
With effort, she controlled her excitement.

Zahra was a student, I, her graduate advisor.
Her family emigrated from Afghanistan
fifteen years ago.

I raised the top of the red silk-lined box.
Inside, I saw a circular disc of concentric blue tones.
Attached was a finely-tied sisal rope,
strung with dark blue beads --
a wall hanging.

Each exterior circle of the disc was sumptuously adorned
with complex shapes of interconnecting
lapis lazuli, black onyx, and aquamarine stones.

A milky-white round protrusion graced the center of the disc,
the middle of which held an aquamarine orb with an intense black “pupil.”
The impression: an eye of terror.
It was disquieting, disturbing, yet exquisitely alluring.

Would I want to hang this strange object
in my home?

“What is this?” I asked Zahra.

It’s an evil eye – to repel negative energy and provide protection to a household.
In my home country,
it’s been an important cultural object
for many hundreds of years.
I thought you would appreciate it.

She smiled, her eyes shining.

I now understood the sincerity and trust, affection and appreciation
that this “evil” eye
expressed to me.
I would hang it prominently.
