Major Addition to Religious Studies Summer Program at Loudoun
By Steve Goldman, Program Chair for Religious ProgrammingOur Religious Studies summer program at Loudoun welcomes a world-renowned scholar of Islam for the course L608 Jesus and Mary in the Muslim Tradition. Mason Professor Abdulaziz Sachedina’s presentation will be on June 20 at 9:40. This session is not listed in the course catalog because it is a late addition to our summer program.

Dr. Sachedina is a prolific writer and his publications include: Islamic Messianism (State University of New York, 1980); Human Rights and the Conflicts of Culture, co-authored (University of South Carolina, 1988) The Just Ruler in Shiite Islam (Oxford University Press, 1988); The Prolegomena to the Qur’an (Oxford University Press, 1998), The Islamic Roots of Democratic Pluralism (Oxford University Press, 2002), Islamic Biomedical Ethics: Theory and Application (Oxford University Press, February 2009), Islam and the Challenge of Human Rights (Oxford University Press, September 2009), in addition to numerous articles in academic journals (see https://religious.gmu.edu/people/asachedi).

We offer our gratitude to Dr. Sachedina for his willingness to support OLLI’s Religious Studies program. This certainly is a session that our Loudoun members will wish to attend. To register, please click here.

Primavera in Winter

Resting on the old
Wooden bench,
Near our great cherry tree,
Its boughs
Spring loaded with blossoms.
Suddenly, in a great
Gust of wind,
Pink and white spirals
Burst outward
Enveloping us
Like last year’s snow, but
Fragrant, warm
And so very, very
Welcome.
