Teaching Online Classes

Before Conducting a Class:

  • Consult with OLLI staff to obtain an instructor account at OLLI if you don't already have one.
  • Hold planning discussion(s) with class sponsor (if any) and OLLI staff, mainly the designated site assistant.
  • All instructors are required to use the OLLI licensed Zoom platform for the class.  OLLI staff will provide class links to students and teachers.
  • Learn and practice teaching your class.
  • Identify the materials you will use in class through the ‘Share Screen’ function (embedded videos, links to web videos, PowerPoint, documents, photos, other) and practice using the 'Share Screen' feature.
  • Decide how you want to manage student questions and comments during your class.

Beginning of Class

  • Obtain the class link from OLLI and connect. For details on connecting to Zoom classes, review the procedures here.
  • Online classrooms will open 15 to 20 minutes early for you and the site assistant to review the plan of action for delivery of class.
  • The OLLI site assistant will host the session and discuss a few introductory comments, along with a few housekeeping rules, after all attendees have been admitted to class. Some participants will arrive after the sessions begins.

During Class

  • The site assistant will mute all Zoom attendees to avoid echo, distracting background noises, and interruptions.
  • The site assistant will monitor the chat window and raised hands to address Q&A.
  • Relax and have fun as you present your material! Connect with the participants in a friendly and welcoming tone.

At the End of Class

  • Be mindful of the class ending time as others do not want to miss course content but may have other obligations or another class. The site assistant will monitor the time left.
  • Encourage questions or feedback from students.
  • If you wish, you may share your email address.
  • Perform a self-assessment of the class and make changes as needed for future classes.

Preparing for Problems

  • In the event of an “unstable internet connection,” participants may need to turn off video.
  • In the rare case of the host losing connection while you and the class participants remain online, you will manage the session until the host rejoins.
  • For technical glitches and emergencies during a class session, the site assistant will handle and resolve them.
